SUMMARY:

This work presents an economic and environmental assessment of the production of isopropyl myristate through the esterification of myristic acid with n-propanol using reactive distillation. The process was simulated considering two process configurations: a conventional configuration with two distillation columns, and an intensified configuration with the addition of an external solvent and a decanter. Both configurations were evaluated at pressures of 1 and 3 bar, considering a closed recycle loop in the intensified case, unlike the references found in the literature. The solvent flow rate results obtained for the closed-loop recycle model from simulation convergence showed a value 134.7 times lower than that reported in the literature for the decoupled recycle system. This reduction enabled a 64.22% decrease in the energy consumption of the intensified process while maintaining product purity. The optimization of operating conditions using the total annual cost (TAC) through the simulated annealing algorithm indicated that the intensified configuration achieved the best results, with operation at 1 bar showing the best economic performance (40.43% reduction) and the lowest environmental impact according to EI99 (6.85% reduction) when compared to the conventional case.
