SUMMARY:

The transition toward a Circular Economy has been widely discussed as an alternative to the linear model of production and consumption, particularly in response to challenges related to resource depletion, waste generation, and the growing demand for more sustainable development models. In this context, Circular Business Models (CBMs) emerge as strategic mechanisms capable of promoting the reduction, reuse, recovery, and reintegration of resources into productive cycles. However, although the literature has advanced significantly regarding the technological, operational, and economic dimensions of CBMs, studies addressing the social and practice-based dimensions that sustain, reproduce, and transform these models in everyday contexts remain limited.

Given this gap, this dissertation aims to analyze the relationship between Circular Economy, Social Practices, and Circular Business Models, seeking to understand how the literature approaches CBMs from the perspective of Social Practice Theory (SPT) and how this perspective may contribute to the theoretical and analytical advancement of the field. To achieve this objective, the research will adopt a multipaper structure composed of three interrelated articles.

The first article will conduct an integrative and structured literature review on CBMs and SPT using the TCCM (Theory, Context, Characteristics, and Methodology) and ADO (Antecedents, Decisions, and Outcomes) frameworks, based on articles indexed in the Web of Science database. The study will map the main theories, contexts, characteristics, and methodologies employed in the literature, as well as identify antecedents, organizational decisions, and outcomes associated with circular business models.

The second article will develop an integrative theoretical proposition articulating the foundations of Circular Economy and Social Practice Theory to understand CBMs as socially constituted practices sustained by materials, competences, and meanings. Based on this integration, the study intends to propose an analytical framework aimed at understanding the dynamics of sustainable transformation associated with circular business models.

Finally, the third article will adopt an empirical approach to investigate how social practices influence the adoption, operationalization, and consolidation of circular business models in specific organizational contexts. The study may employ qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods approaches, depending on the final methodological design, in order to deepen the understanding of the interactions between social practices, organizational behavior, and circular strategies.

This dissertation is expected to contribute to the advancement of Circular Economy discussions by integrating sociotechnical and organizational perspectives, expanding the understanding of CBMs beyond predominantly economic and technocentric approaches. Furthermore, the study intends to provide theoretical, methodological, and managerial contributions for researchers, organizations, and policymakers engaged in promoting sustainability and socio-environmental transformation.
